Niugini Organics Today

Volcanic Eruptions

After the 1994 volcanic eruptions that all but destroyed the town of Rabaul, we finalised the purchase our Kerevat premises. Coconut oil production was expanded with the commissioning of new equipment.

'Curls'

The Curls range of coconut oil based cosmetics was expanded to 11 lines. Twenty years on, Curls is still very much a household name right throughout Papua New Guinea from the smallest village trade-store to the largest capital city supermarkets. The brand is even available in far north Queensland through our Cairns based distributor.

Pacific Islanders have always used coconut and flowers in their hair and on their skin. The rationale then is the same as now; take a centuries old tradition and make it relevant to the 21st century.

Soap

A soap boiling plant with a triple french milled finishing line was installed and for many years our yellow Vulcan laundry bar was a significant product in retail stores throughout PNG. These days we concentrate on customized hotel guest soaps, as well as of course, Niugini Organics coconut oil soaps. In any case the main ingredient has always been coconut oil, produced on site.

Organic Certification

In 2009 we attained Organic Status under the (Australian) National Standard for Organic and Biodynamic produce as administered by The Organic Food Chain. We were ready to expand exports.  We now have distributors based in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Staff Numbers

Staff numbers have increased to over 40 employees and the coconuts that are purchased, provide the main income for over 200 local families.
